His main area of expertise is the study and development of pattern recognition techniques and their application to image and video processing and analysis. In particular, his contributions are in the fields: people health, mainly medical image analysis for the purpose of providing tools for automatic or semiautomatic diagnosis as a support for medical activity; people safety and security, mainly image and video analysis from video surveillance cameras.

He is an Associate Editor for Pattern Analysis and Applications journal (Springer). He is guest editor of the Special issue "Synthetic Images to Support Computer-Aided Diagnosis Systems" for the journal Pattern Recognition Letters (Elsevier). He regularly serves as a PC member and as a reviewer for several international conferences and journals in the pattern recognition and machine learning fields.

He co-organizes and co-chairs the AIRCAD Workshop series (International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics in Computer-Aided Diagnosis) with two editions held in conjunction with ICIAP (International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing) in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

He is currently a member of the IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and of the CVPL - Italian Association for Research in Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, which is the Italian section of the IAPR - International Association for Pattern Recognition.
